Getting tips on how to manage workplace stress is a common request from many of my clients. The key is to be measured, consistent and holistic in your approach to what you do. A measured and consistent approach to managing your wellbeing sets you up to succeed no matter what sort of deadlines or challenges are thrust upon you at a moment’s notice.
As a rule, eating well, drinking plenty of water, exercising, getting plenty of sleep, making time for friends and family, doing a variety of interesting activities, and having regular technology-free alone time creates balance and sets you up for success.
Balance breeds success when dealing with stress.
This is the key message I give to all of my clients: be balanced, measured, consistent, and persistent in all that you do and you will be better placed to handle whatever is thrown at you.
Following are some key activities you can do at work to help you manage stress.
1. Keep a bottle of water on your desk and take regular small sips during the day. This will help you stay hydrated as well as flush out any unwanted toxins out of your system.
2. Make sure that your desk is set up ergonomically correctly. Your posture affects how you feel, so periodically check how you are sitting and standing so that you don’t fall into bad habits.
3. Every 45 minutes, where possible, take three deep breaths and let go of all the tension in your body. Then get up and go for a short walk to the photocopier and back just to get your body and joints moving again.
4. Eat a rainbow of fruit and vegetables at lunch. This will help you get all the nutrients you need to feel alert and ready for action.
5. Learn to laugh and don’t take things too seriously. There is always another way to look at things and you will always come up with a solution.
6. Build relationships and share with your colleagues and staff. Let them know when you think they have done well.
7. Look at solving problems as a challenge and an opportunity to shine. This will help make those extra hours interesting and fun and give you a pay-off that will help make it work for you.
Be balanced, measured, consistent and persistent.
Take the time and do the activities necessary to make sure you are functioning at your optimum health and wellbeing level so you feel strong, confident and capable of taking workplace stress in your stride.
