Be it the environment, an organisation or an individual’s ecosystem, systems thinking is a key approach that can lead to optimal wellbeing.
Unlike other forms of analysis, which often use a reductionist approach to find a solution, systems thinking acknowledges the interconnectedness of the whole and the importance every piece has on the whole wellbeing of any given ecosystem.
We have all experienced unexpected consequences (good and bad) of changes we have made in our lives because we didn’t take a big picture view or even know to when making decisions.
Systems thinking is a approach which seeks to bring this global big picture view to decision making so that we can acknowledge and begin to understand the impact that a change in one area of our life can have on another.
The same applies to organisations: a change in one area will have an impact overall.
Knowing this allows us to develop well thought out, considered, reasoned solutions that consider the whole.
Only by bringing this global big picture view and creating a shared understanding amongst all the parts of our individual lives (or in the case of an organisation, all the stakeholders involved in an organisational change) can a complete solution that considers the whole be found.
Some of the key benefits of bringing a systems thinking approach to organisational wellbeing are:
· It identifies risks which impact the whole organisation
· This thinking promotes an engaged, collaborative, solution focused culture
· It provides solutions to complex problems where traditional thinking hasn’t
· It builds connections between divisions and teams that strengthen relationships creating shared understanding of values and goals
· It provides the opportunity to innovate and identify previously hidden but emerging business opportunities
· It provides the cutting edge in optimising its corporate function, wellbeing and employee value proposition.
We live in an ever-increasing interrelating global economy in an interconnected global world, so it only makes sense that we adapt our thinking and take a global ‘big picture’ systems thinking approach to our decision making.
By embracing this approach, pausing to look up from our devices and considering the impact of all the elements involved in any given ecosystem we can ultimately influence our decision-making process positively.
Through this, we can reach our optimal organisational goals and wellbeing.
