Having a tough day at work?
Lunch time stress busters can be the key to getting through the day, so you don’t feel shattered when you get home.
Myself and numerous clients of mine have personally road tested and confirmed that the following activities really work to get you through the day, when you’re feeling set upon, over extended or anxious at work.
First and foremost, you need to acknowledge and understand, that it is you that needs to look after yourself.
The reality is: Take responsibility for your own wellbeing, no-one else will!
Now, you are ready to try out some strategies that will help get you through the tough days that we all invariably have.
Give these a try:
1) Despite deadlines, make sure you remember to take some time out. Even taking 5 minutes to stop, to have a glass of water and centre yourself can have a dramatic effect on your ability to concentrate and solve problems. Imagine what taking 15 minutes out to focus solely on eating your lunch can do for you. While eating your lunch, make sure that you identify the taste and texture of all you eat. This not only helps you enjoy and digest your food better, it takes your mind off the stressors at work so that you come back refreshed and ready for action. It’s all about being present.
2) Get some exercise, a 15-20-minute run or walk can help rid you of some of the stress hormones that have been building up in your body all morning.
3) Tune out by reading a good book, listening to some relaxing music, or doing some colouring in.
4) Take a Pilates or Yoga class, this will help release tense muscles and free up more energy for the day ahead.
5) Practice meditation. I have met many people who swear that they feel more refreshed and ready for action by doing a 15-minute meditation than having an afternoon sleep.
Of course, there are many other activities that can help. Hopefully these will get you started to find out what works best for you.
Making the commitment, and taking the time to look after yourself first, can dramatically improve your capacity to perform at work, and solve problems that in the moment of overwhelm look and feel unsolvable.
Take the time to set yourself up to perform at your best and become the person that is known for meeting tight deadlines and solving the unsolvable!
